AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS PHOTO ADVENTURE
Newfoundland, Canada is a photographer’s dream. This ancient and vastly unpopulated land has some of the world’s most accessible seabird colonies, endless rolling hills and majestic cliffs that drop down to the powerful Atlantic Ocean.
Newfoundland is home in the spring and summer to millions of seabirds, thousands of humpback whales, and freshly carved icebergs that tend to pop up around the 29,000 kilometers of Newfoundland’s coastline. The following quote from Newfoundland Tourism sums things up nicely:
“Is it the mere wonder of walking on the middle of the earth thanks to a tectonic upheaval half a billion years ago. Or maybe it’s the abundance of fresh sea air, enough, certainly, for a complete purge of mind, body, and soul. Whatever it is, around here, it’s not hard to gain some serious perspective. And perhaps, recover a little sanity”
Nature’s Photo Adventures is proud to bring you this workshop to one of Canada’s most inspiring places - Newfoundland! It is an adventure that just has to be experienced!
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
On this photo adventure we will focus on the following opportunities:
Seabirds and more seabirds: We will be visiting the 3rd largest Gannet colony in the world to photography this beautiful species during nesting. The flight shot opportunities abound as the Gannets go about their daily lives. Behaviors such as courtship displays, fencing, bowing, preening and mating will all be visible for great images. Nests could include young at different stages of development and we can witness the parents bringing food for the chicks. We will be shooting from a cliff’s edge that rises straight up hundreds of feet from the Atlantic!
Other species at the colony include Razorbills, Black-Legged Kittiwakes, Common Murres, Great Cormorants and Black Guillemots. Opportunities for both flight and portrait shots will abound.
The Clown of the Sea – Atlantic Puffins:
Newfoundland is one of the best places on the planet for getting close to and photographing the Atlantic Puffin. We will visit an ecological reserve famous for its thousands of pairs of breeding and nesting Atlantic Puffins. We will be taken by boat to some of the reserves many islands to photograph these speedy and busy Puffins doing what they do best, flying about bringing nesting material and food back to the nests.
We will teach you proper technique on how to capture this speedster in flight. The opportunities are endless; you will have a hard time making up your mind which ones to shoot! We will also have access to places that will allow you to get up close and personal to get some great static shots and portraits of this awesome and colorful species.
Shorebirds:
Newfoundland and Labrador is home to an enormous array of interesting and beautiful shore birds.
We will visit a provincial park where there is a beach with hundreds of shorebirds including Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plovers and the endangered Piping Plover. Willets, Common and Arctic Terns breed and nest here as well.
Bonus Species may include nesting Ospreys bringing fish back to the nest as well as Rough Legged Hawks and Short Eared Owls on the flats and barrens.
Whales, Dolphins and Icebergs:
We have secured the services of a boat tour company & guide that will get us up close and personal to Humpback Whales and Dolphins and very close to the many icebergs off the Northern coast of Newfoundland. This will be an exciting day trip that will surely be a highlight of this workshop!
Digital Workshops: During the evenings for those who wish to participate, we will have image review sessions and talk about techniques and what we can expect to see the next day. In these post processing workshops participants will have ample opportunities to improve skills in Adobe Photoshop. Guided by David and Glenn, participants can learn how to take their images from straight out-of-the-camera RAW images to stunning final works of art (ready for printing or websites).
On the last evening, we will give out prizes for the top 3 images of the workshop!
